How we do it in our studio
No wipe-on shortcuts here. We wet-sand each lens by hand, machine-polish it back to true clarity, then seal it with a UV-stable coating so the haze doesn’t just come back.
Common Headlight restoration questions
How long does headlight restoration take?
Plan on roughly 45 minutes to an hour for a standard pair, and here is where that time actually goes. We tape off the paint and trim around each lens first, then wet-sand the lens by hand through several grits to strip the yellowed, oxidized top layer, machine-polish it back to real clarity, and seal it. A wipe-on kit skips all of that, which is why it looks cloudy again in a month. Badly hazed lenses take a little longer because we keep stepping back through finer grits until the clarity is genuinely there. You are welcome to wait or drop the car and grab it the same day.
How long do the results last?
This lives or dies on the final step, and it is the one most cheap jobs skip. Sanding and polishing alone will make a lens look incredible for a few weeks, then the bare polycarbonate starts yellowing again because the factory UV layer that used to protect it is already gone. Every restoration we do gets sealed with a UV-stable coating to replace that protection, and with it on there you are realistically looking at a year or two of clarity, longer if the car is garaged and you keep harsh chemicals off the lenses. We will show you how to protect it when you pick up.
Is it cheaper than buying new headlights?
By a wide margin, and it usually is not close. A single OEM headlight assembly on a lot of newer cars runs several hundred to well over a thousand dollars before anyone installs it, and on models with adaptive or sensor-loaded housings it climbs from there. Restoration works with the lenses already on your car, so you are paying for skilled labor and materials instead of a part number. Unless a housing is physically cracked or the internals are damaged, restoring is the smart call the large majority of the time.
Will it actually improve my night visibility?
Noticeably, and this is the part we care about more than the looks. A yellowed, hazy lens scatters and absorbs a real chunk of the light your headlights are already producing, so your usable beam at night quietly shrinks. Once we cut that oxidation back and re-clear the lens, the light leaves the housing the way the engineers intended. The first night drive home is usually the moment it clicks. If your low beams have felt dim lately and the bulbs test fine, cloudy lenses are almost always the reason.
Will it work on badly yellowed or hazy lenses?
Those are honestly our favorite ones, because the before and after is dramatic. Deep yellowing and heavy oxidation sit in the top layers of the polycarbonate, and stripping those layers back is exactly what our sanding stages are built to do, so lenses that look past saving usually come back close to factory. The two things we cannot sand out are cracks in the lens itself and moisture trapped inside the housing, because those are internal. If we spot either when we look your car over, we will tell you straight before you spend a dollar.
